Student Dependency
So for chatter in my answer.
Hi everyone, welcome to rock the Fasa student dependency webinars.
Today we're going to be discussing with you how to find out what your dependencies status is for the Fasa, whether you're dependent or independent.
Can you keep in mind during this presentation you can see us, but we cannot see you. So if at any point in the presentation you have a question, send it to the chat. We have a moderate are an she'll be watching the chat throughout the presentation.
This is being recorded and will be made available to you afterwards on our website. All students who complete the FAFSA before October 31st will be entered to win $1000 scholarship. We have 5 so come back and check in with us on that and then. Attendees of our web and R series today will be entered to win a rock. The fast said Door Prize.
Alright, so your dependency status determines what financial information you must supply on your FAFSA.
If your dependent for report yours and your parents information and if you are independent, you will supply only your own information. But if you're married, you will also supply your spouses.
Alright, so we do have 10 questions and we'll go over some of these, but as you can see them there.
The first one is going to be based on your date of birth.
2nd is if you are married or separated.
3rd is if you're going to be seeking a Masters or a doctoral program.
4th is if you have children that are going to be receiving at least or more than half their support from you.
#5 is do you have dependents other than your children or spouse who live with you and will receive more than half of their support from you?
#6 is are you currently serving on active duty in the US Armed Forces? #7 is if you are a veteran of the US armed forces.
#8 is at any time since you turned 13 were both of your parents deceased. Were you in foster care or were you a Ward of the court?
And #9 are you an emancipated minor?
Or are you in legal guardianship?
And #10, are you an unaccompanied youth who is homeless or self supporting or at risk of being homeless?
Alright, so the question is, am I dependent or independent?
If you answered yes to one or more of the questions that I just read to you.
Then Yes, you are going to be considered an independent student.
But if you couldn't answer yes and you answered no to every question, you are going to be considered a dependent student and you will need to supply your parents information.
All right question #4 is one that we have questions from a lot.
The question is, do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you?
So you are going to select yes if you have children and the receiving more than half of their support from you.
You'll put yes if you're expecting a child to be born before or during the academic year that you're filling out fast support.
In this case, 2122.
And you will be providing more than half of their support.
You will select no if you don't have children.
You're also going to select know if your children are not receiving more than half of their support from you.
And also.
One thing that does come up if you are under 24 and living at home but you have a child you are not going to put, yes, you will have to put no because your parents are helping you support that child.
All right question #5 do you have a pen? It's other than your children or spouse who live with you and received more than half of their support for me.
If you also or only have a dependent so someone who may not be your own child.
This could be a parent, someone you have legal guardianship of.
And you provide more than 50% of their support. You're going to put yes.
Foster children cannot be included in this.
You will put no if you have an opinion, but you don't financially support them. This is again where that comes in. If you're living with your parents.
Then you are not supporting their living expenses.
Alright, I'm going to hand it over to Heather she's our veteran certifying official and she is going to discuss with you. How do you know if you're a veteran or not?
Hey guys I miss Heather I am the BA School surfing fischel Here at the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith and so this question actually comes up an awful lot. How do you know whether you're a veteran or not for financial aid purposes an this is very different from what VA might consider. So the big things understand is you are not a veteran unless.
You have been on active duty orders for other than state.
Purposes so if you have just been active duty here at the base of the 188th or going to another city here within Arkansas, then you are not considered a veteran. Now if you were on presidential orders.
Somewhere, then you would be considered a veteran. You are also considered a veteran. Of course, if you are active duty in any of the armed forces that does not consider guard.
And then of course to be considered a veteran, you have to be released under honorable conditions.
Coming up next.
OK, so this has been of course have engaged in active duty, including basic training. So if you are in the armed forces including back basic training, then you are considered a veteran US Armed Forces of National Guard or reserve enlistee have called to active duty for other than state or training purposes.
Um, you would be considered a veteran, and then of course, were released under conditions other than dishonorable.
And then also you want to answer yes if you're not now a veteran, but you will be by June 30th of 2021.
And then, of course, here's my contact information if you're not sure whether you will be considered a veteran or not, please don't hesitate to give me a call. Shoot me an email. You can provide me with your orders and I can take a look at those and evaluate those to decide whether you would be considered a veteran or not. If you're not sure, and you go ahead and fill out the FAFSA before having me take a look at that, it's going to come up in our system for me to review that, and I'm going to ask for that documentation. It is a little bit easier for you if you ask me first. That way you don't have to go back and make changes later.
Which will hold up your fast bus of course please if you have any questions, just give me a call, shoot me an email so we can get that taken care of the first time for you.
I'm gonna turn it back over to miss Tiffany.
Thank you, Heather.
Alright, so our next topic is what is dependent student must provide.
OK, so a dependent student is going to be required and this is by federal law to provide parent information. This is true even if your parents refuse to contribute to your education.
They are unwilling to provide the fast information or the information on the FAFSA or during verification.
If your parents don't claim you as a dependent for tax purposes, so even if you're not claimed on their tax forms on the 10:40, you're still a dependent.
Even if you can prove and demonstrate total self sufficiency, you still have to put your parent information.
If you guys don't get along, that's not reason enough to be able to proceed with the Fasa without parent information.
And this is also true if you were a single parent or pregnant.
OK, there are certain situations where we can do a dependency override. Some things are or do warrant that in a certain situation.
So situations like that would be an abusive home environment abandoned by the parent abandonment by the parent.
Homelessness, being unaccompanied or apparent death after you completed the Fasa.
So if you are unable to provide parent information because of one of these unique situations.
Please choose the option submit your fasa without parent information.
And then reach out and contact the schools financial aid office where you're interested in going. Sometimes that could be us, but we do have information here, so you may want to write down that website.
It is out on ouruas.edu website.
And this would get us started with the dependency appeal.
