Good evening, everyone my name is Nick I work over at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith right now. I'm here to share with you. Some information about the Miles Friedman Honors Program. Super excited to do so can't wait to show you guys what I've got in store.
Who alright folks, sorry for that delay in case you were here before. My name is Nick I work over at the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith and I'm here to tell you a little bit today about the miles Friedman honors program. Super exciting opportunity for those higher achieving students who are very interested in coming to uafs. Lots of cool opportunities. Lots of cool things to share, but otherwise we are recording so I'm going to go ahead and give you guys a few more minutes. And then we're going to get started.
If anyone has any questions at any point please. Feel free to drop them in the chat or in the questions chat. I'm happy to answer those very quickly like I said, This is going to be kind of short so we're going to be rock and roll in here.
Well go ahead and get started since we are recording anyone can look at this later. So we don't want to make it too. Horribly awkward for them. So I'm going to go ahead and move forward. I just want to give you a little overview of the actual honors program so every year 20 to 40 is the maximum students are allowed into the Honors Program. Every year in a new class. I believe the first class was in 2011, which was the year. I graduated high school so I feel pretty special, and connect to the Honors Program. Even if I didn't go here. We have all sorts of special academic opportunities for you.
Things like that that will be offered, only to you and I'll get into those here in a little bit a competitive scholarship, So what that means is a lot of your schooling is actually going to be paid for will get into kind of the specifics of that here in a bit, but that scholarship is a really big part of the honors program and then you have researching capstones being in the honors program gives you the opportunity to participate in different research opportunities and also there's an expectation of a capstone project and we'll talk about that, more in a little bit as well.
And then just out of class opportunities. Whether that be speakers or opportunities to travel or visiting professors who are coming from maybe you at Fayetteville or somewhere else. Lots of things going on. But we'll get into all of these things a little deeper here in just a second.
So how do you join the Miles Friedman Honors program so the first step is to apply to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith and be accepted you're dealing with our new slate program so that's pretty sweet nice and easy way to see where you are in the process you just want to make sure that your application of ufs is in an accepted by November 15th or before. Then you will also need to apply for the miles. Freeman honor scholarship on our application portal. That's an aspect of that she'll go to our portal and you'll be able to.
Apply for that, if you qualify through the information you've already given us. We are doing our best to make sure that anyone who qualifies for scholarships is getting information about them, and knows to sign up, so just a few things on that scholarship. There is a November 15th deadline. So it is a little bit more complicated than are just merit based scholarships. There is a different application part like I said, You'll find that our portal. But you want to have all that done and submitted by November 15th to be considered there is an AC T requirement of 27.
Anna GPA requirement of a 3.5 it's your high school GPA good thing to know is that the miles. Friedman honors program is a little flexible so if you've got a 26 and a 4.0 or you've got a 30 and a 3.3. We will more than likely be interested in hearing what you have to say like I said there's a little more to the application for honors other than just your AC Tion GPA. We're looking for well, rounded people who want to be part of a special program.
So if that, if you fit this, but you don't necessarily fit the Harden fest qualifications of the 27 AC T or the 3.5 GPA we will work with you and get you what you need so to keep that scholarship through your sophomore junior and senior year not a huge deal. You seem to keep a 3.2 GPA and the required credit hours so the first year. It's actually 27 hours as a freshman during your first semester and every year after that, it is.
30 and so you want to complete 30 hours or 15 a semester that is enough to keep you on track to graduate in four years, which is awesome, So what are the values of the scholarship so good thing about it? Is it pays full tuition in state tuition and fees so if you're an in state student you will not be paying anything as far as tuition or fees go right now. UA FS that totals to about 7107 thousand $200. So it's definitely a big chunk of change the majority of anything you're going to be paying here we have one of the lowest.
Tuition and fee rates in the state and we're happy to keep that but we're doing our best to continue to help you in lower that even further. There's also an optional housing piece for 2500 for two years as you can live on campus for two years and have assistance with that. I know that a lot of students do the honor students like to be plugged in. I know that we are working at creating new living learning communities on campus. I would not be surprised if the honors program in the future move towards more of a living learning community as we see success with those students on our campus.
And so the last part of getting the scholarship is actually the interview process so in the past. We've had students who have made it to the final part of the application come to campus and interview us in person. Obviously with kovid going on with the fact that I am on this chat right now, the way that I am. We're not having you on campus and that's OK. Our goal is to make sure that you have the FaceTime that you need and we need to make sure that you're a good fit for the program so this year. We're planning on doing our virtual interviews with staff and current honor students.
In the interview are going to be with two or three other people. Those two or three other people are going to be honors teachers and honors students. They pick their own this is not a scenario where the Chancellor is necessarily picking or we admissions are picking. This is a broader range of students and faculty who are looking for those great students to be part of these kind of special opportunities.
So benefits right now, the miles, Freeman Honors program has a four year graduation rate of 83%, so over 4 out of five kids who end up in the Honors Program, or out of here in four years. Not that we want you gone we love having you here. You're an important part of our campus. But the goal is to graduate you in four years soon continue your life and get on your life jury. So the students who are in the program have a lot of opportunity to do that.
We also have tuition and fees covered like I mentioned before you will not have to worry about tuition and fees whether they raise or whatever happens as long as you maintain your 3.2 in your hours. You were going to keep tuition and fees covered for yourself and then we have honors classes like I said, These are going to classes for you and your fellow honor students they could be from different levels or I guess years, but these students are all eager to learn they're all high capacity learners. They are ready and willing.
To get into the academics and hopefully give you guys more of an accelerated personal experience in your classes, especially for those honors ones and the researching capstone.
Then we have the speakers and service opportunities. The Honors program brings in speakers all the time whether it be from other institutions from in the area from classes that you will be taking there are tons of opportunities for you to meet people in different fields that you're interested in going into and then service opportunities as well. The Miles Friedman group goes out and does service projects so if you're looking to get your hands dirty and help people. The Miles Freedom Program will obviously be a place for you to do that.
And then we have a sense of community and continued networking. I wanted to bring this up because I was talking with Doctor Seiler. The man who runs the honors program and he was telling me about how these students staying contact. They're using each other for work. References they're using each other for school references. They go into grad school. In fact member of I believe what he said, was the 2011 and 2012 class of the miles freebooters program got married and they had a whole bunch of honors kids at their wedding so definitely something to keep in mind.
These students are plugged in engaged they're going to be available to you for the rest of your life, especially if you continue to hang out with them for four years as honor students you're going to get to know each other. You're going to get to know each other's strengths and help each other as you continue on through your education, ambient and then we have domestic and international main master travel. I wanted to talk a little bit about this as well all the pictures you have seen in this program just the three that I have are from the events that are the.
Travel that the honors program does in May, so after graduation. But before summer starts. We've got a week or two in there. We call them. A master and are honor students take a trip every year for the Maymester. They tend to alternate where there go so international versus national have pictures of them in DC going to all sorts of historical sites. An national monuments. There is obviously there in front of Stonehenge. There they went to Scotland, a couple of years ago, Scotland and northern Britain.
Spent a lot of time, there, apparently they've been to other British Isles. They have been to England. They've been to Wales. I've seen all sorts of photos. I've got this one right here. I believe they're in Guatemala. It could be wrong. But like I said they have a lot of opportunities to travel internationally. These students do. There is a requirement so students in the honors program are required to participate in some form of travel or academic.
Travel weather that be the main master trip or if the honor student wants to do a full semester abroad. The Honors program does its best to help those students get plugged into whatever program is best for them. Whether that student knows what they want to study but not where they want to study it or they know they want to go to Australia to study but they don't know what they want to study as long as you've got some direction or honors program. Our international office will do their best to get you where you need to go.
So I am kind of at the end of just the general overview.
Are there any quick questions before I do kind of wrap up an introduce you guys to doctor Seiler?
Alright cool deal well if you guys have any questions, Please send them to admissions@uafs.edu that's where you can reach me. My personal email is nick.daily@uas.edu very easy to get a hold of. He is a great resource as a resource to me to make this presentation. You can be a resource for you, if you're interested in coming to you. AFS, especially if you're into the honors program so get ahold to him. He's a pretty cool guy. I've gotten to know him over the past couple of days like I've said he is beloved on campus. He teaches a yearly class on Harry Potter and all sorts of things like that. He is definitely a little bit out of the box and that's why we love him being in charge of the Honors Program. It gives those students, the opportunity to express themselves and be the students they need to be in a program that is designed for them.
